The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a cornerstone of Christian faith, attested by several witnesses as documented in the New Testament. These witnesses provide a diverse and multifaceted testimony to the risen Christ. Here are some of the individuals and groups who encountered the resurrected Jesus:

  1. Mary Magdalene: She is often recognized as the first witness of the resurrected Christ. In John 20:11-18, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early in the morning and found it empty. Jesus appeared to her, but she did not recognize Him until He called her by name.
  2. Other Women: Matthew’s Gospel mentions that Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene and “the other Mary” as they were returning to tell the disciples about the empty tomb (Matthew 28:9-10). Luke’s account includes Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women who were told by angels of Jesus’ resurrection and went to tell the disciples (Luke 24:10).
  3. Cleopas and Another Disciple: In Luke 24:13-35, two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus when Jesus joined them on their journey, although they did not recognize Him immediately. He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
  4. Simon Peter: The Gospel of Luke mentions that the Lord appeared to Simon (Luke 24:34), and Paul’s letter to the Corinthians also confirms that Jesus appeared to Peter, then to the Twelve (1 Corinthians 15:5).
  5. The Twelve Apostles: Despite initially appearing to a group of ten apostles, since Thomas was absent (John 20:19-24), Jesus later appeared to all eleven remaining apostles, including Thomas, who then believed (John 20:26-29).
  6. More Than 500 Brethren at Once: Paul mentions that Jesus appeared to more than 500 people at one time, most of whom were still alive when he wrote his letter, providing an opportunity for verification of his claim (1 Corinthians 15:6).
  7. James: Jesus made a specific appearance to James, his brother, which is also mentioned by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:7. This encounter is significant in James’s transformation from skepticism to becoming a leader in the Jerusalem church.
  8. All the Apostles: Before His ascension into heaven, Jesus appeared to the apostles and gave them the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20).
  9. Saul (Paul): Although not a witness to the resurrection, Paul encountered the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, an event that transformed him from a persecutor of Christians to one of the most influential apostles (Acts 9:3-6).

These appearances of the resurrected Jesus, to individuals and groups, including women and men, insiders and skeptics, in various locations and circumstances, underscore the physical reality of His resurrection and its central importance to Christian faith.
