This question often arises in discussions about the nature of God’s omnipotence. The Bible teaches that God is all-powerful, possessing unlimited power and authority. “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.” (Jeremiah 32:17) Similarly, Jesus said, “With God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)
The question of whether God can create a rock so heavy that He cannot lift it is a paradox designed to explore the limits of divine power. However, the Bible presents God’s omnipotence as consistent with His nature and character. God cannot act contrary to His nature. For instance, “God cannot lie” (Titus 1:2) and “He cannot deny Himself.” (2 Timothy 2:13) These statements affirm that God’s actions are always in harmony with His truth, holiness, and integrity.
Therefore, the question might not fully capture the biblical portrayal of God’s omnipotence. It’s designed to challenge our understanding of omnipotence by introducing a logical contradiction. But in biblical terms, God’s power is not about performing logically contradictory actions but about His sovereign rule and authority over all creation, His ability to do all that is in accord with His character, will, and purposes. “For nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37) indicates that God’s power is directed towards accomplishing His divine will, rather than engaging in tasks that are logically contradictory or meaningless.
