Joe Wheeler The Bible offers guidance on dealing with foolishness and the wisdom in choosing when to engage in arguments. Proverbs provides insight into this matter. In Proverbs 26:4-5, it says:
“Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.”
These verses provide a nuanced approach to handling foolishness. They suggest that there are times when it may be wise not to engage in arguments that lead nowhere, to avoid behaving as the fool does. At other times, it might be necessary to respond to correct falsehoods and prevent the foolish person from becoming arrogant in their views.
It isn’t considered a sin to avoid arguments with fools, but it requires discernment in deciding when to engage and when to step back. The emphasis is on pursuing wisdom, peace, and love rather than getting entangled in unnecessary disputes.
Additionally, 2 Timothy 2:23-24 advises, “But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient.”
This passage encourages believers to avoid quarrels that lead to strife and instead embody gentleness and patience. By seeking wisdom from God and following the guidance in Scripture, we can discern the appropriate response in each situation.
