In the Gospel of Matthew, it is recorded that Jesus, while on the cross, cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This cry is a reference to Psalm 22, a psalm of lament and trust in God’s ultimate deliverance. In this moment, Jesus was not questioning his identity as God, but rather expressing the depth of his humanity and the weight of the sin of the world that he was bearing on the cross. It was a moment of intense suffering and separation from the Father as Jesus took on the sins of the world to bring about redemption for all who believe in him. This cry shows the depth of Jesus’ sacrifice and his willingness to endure separation from God in order to reconcile humanity to God.
