The Bible presents themes of life’s sanctity and the value God places on human beings, from conception to natural death. It does not directly address contemporary political terms such as “pro-life” or “pro-choice,” as these are modern constructs. However, Scripture provides principles that have guided believers in understanding issues related to the sanctity of life, freedom, and moral responsibility.

Psalm 139:13-16 celebrates God’s intimate knowledge and care for an individual from conception, indicating the value of life at its earliest stage: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

Similarly, in the Mosaic Law, life is protected under various commandments and statutes, illustrating the importance of preserving human life, which is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).

Regarding choices and freedom, the Bible emphasizes the importance of making decisions that honor God and reflect His commandments. Deuteronomy 30:19-20 presents the call to choose life in obedience to God, demonstrating the value of making choices aligned with His will: “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Thus, while the Bible does not directly engage with the terms “pro-life” or “pro-choice” as understood in contemporary discussions, it lays a foundational view of life’s intrinsic value and the call to make choices that honor the life God gives. In navigating these complex issues, individuals and communities are encouraged to seek wisdom through prayer, the study of Scripture, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
