The Bible teaches that God is eternal, sovereign, and the Creator of all that exists. According to Scripture, God has always existed and is the one true God, above all gods and idols humans have worshiped throughout history. The Bible addresses the existence of other gods as either idols made by human hands or as spiritual entities that are not to be worshiped in place of the one true God.
Isaiah 45:5-6 offers a clear declaration of God’s sovereignty and uniqueness: “I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides me. I am the Lord, and there is no other.” This passage reflects God’s omnipresence and omnipotence, affirming His authority over all creation, regardless of the time period or the cultural context of other deities being worshiped, such as during the era when Greek gods were prominent.
The Apostle Paul, when speaking to the people of Athens as recorded in Acts 17:22-31, acknowledged the religiosity of the Greeks and their worship of various gods but pointed them to the “unknown god” they had acknowledged among their many altars. He revealed this God to be the one Creator of all, who does not live in temples built by hands (referring to Acts 17:24) and who commands all people everywhere to repent because He has appointed a day when He will judge the world with justice by the man He has designated (Jesus Christ), as affirmed by His resurrection from the dead (referencing Acts 17:30-31).
Throughout history, regardless of the specific deities being worshiped in various cultures, the Bible’s message remains that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the Father of Jesus Christ—is the only eternal God who was, and is, present and active in the world. He calls all people to recognize Him, turn from idols, and worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24).
