“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 2:14 speaks profoundly to the spiritual discernment that comes from the Holy Spirit. The verse says: “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

In essence, this passage teaches that a person who does not have the Spirit of God (referred to as the “natural man”) is unable to understand and accept the truths from God. These truths are revealed by the Spirit and can only be truly comprehended through spiritual discernment, which the Holy Spirit provides. To the natural man, without the Spirit’s enlightenment, the profound and liberating truths of God seem foolish or nonsensical. This underscores the vast difference between God’s wisdom and human wisdom and highlights the necessity of the Holy Spirit’s role in understanding spiritual matters.
