In the order of creation as described in the book of Genesis, God created animals before He created mankind. On the fifth day, God created the creatures of the sea and the birds of the air (Genesis 1:20-23). On the sixth day, God created the land animals and then mankind as the culmination of His creation (Genesis 1:24-31). Specifically, Genesis 1:26-27 tells us about the creation of mankind, after the animals: “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

This sequence highlights the special place humanity holds in creation, made in the image of God and given stewardship over the rest of creation.
