The concept of rewards in hell is not supported by the teachings found within the Scriptures. The Bible presents hell, referred to as Gehenna in the New Testament and Sheol in the Old Testament, not as a place of reward but as a state or place of judgment and eternal separation from God for those who have rejected Him.
Jesus spoke about hell in terms such as a “fiery furnace” where “there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 13:42), indicating suffering and regret rather than reward. The final judgment, as depicted in Revelation 20:14-15, says, “Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” This passage underscores the eternal consequence of separation from God rather than suggesting any form of reward.
The Bible encourages turning away from sin and turning to God through faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, which is the assurance of eternal life with God rather than punishment. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). The emphasis is on the hope and redemption available through Jesus Christ, not on the nature of punishment in hell.
