If evidence shows Christianity to be true, then the afterlife is also true.
The assurance of an afterlife, beyond what is revealed in the Scriptures, can be discerned through the lens of faith, the testimony of the Holy Spirit, and the innate longing in the human heart for eternity. The Bible tells us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
This verse suggests that God has planted an awareness of the eternal within the human spirit, a sense that there is more to existence than the physical life we see. While the Scriptures provide the clearest depiction of the afterlife, offering hope and direction, the universal human intuition of something beyond death speaks to a truth that resonates across cultures and ages.
In the book of Romans, Paul discusses how God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse (Romans 1:20). This speaks to the understanding that one can observe the world, with its complexity and beauty, and infer the existence of a Creator and a purpose beyond our earthly life.
However, it is through faith in Jesus Christ and His words in the Scripture that one finds the most concrete assurance of the afterlife. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die” (John 11:25-26). It is through this promise, and the resurrection of Christ Himself, that believers have a sure hope of eternal life.
The witness of the Holy Spirit also assures believers of their inheritance in the afterlife. Paul writes, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory” (Romans 8:16-17).
In summary, while the Bible offers the most explicit and reliable account of the afterlife, the universal human intuition of eternity, the observable world, and the testimony of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of believers also point to the reality of life beyond this one.
