To discern whether one might be in a state that could be considered “lukewarm” in their faith, it’s valuable to reflect on the message found in Revelation 3:15-16, where the Lord speaks to the church in Laodicea: “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”
Being “lukewarm” spiritually can manifest in various ways, such as a lack of zeal for God’s Word and His ways, indifference towards prayer and worship, or a general complacency in one’s relationship with God. This condition reveals itself when faith does not significantly influence one’s decisions, actions, or lifestyle, leading to a life that is not distinctly different from those who do not profess faith in Christ.
To avoid or address a lukewarm state, consider the counsel in James 4:8: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” This involves a sincere examination of one’s heart and actions, repentance where necessary, and a recommitment to living according to God’s Word.
Evaluating one’s spiritual temperature requires honest reflection and a willingness to align one’s life more closely with the teachings of Jesus, who calls His followers to a vibrant, committed relationship with Him, marked by love, obedience, and service.
