The omnipotence of God is evident in creation. Genesis 1:1 begins, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” showcasing His power to create everything from nothing by His will alone. Psalm 33:6 reinforces this by stating, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.”
Furthermore, God’s ability to control and sustain the universe attests to His omnipotence. Colossians 1:16-17 says, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.” This passage not only speaks of God’s power in creation but also His continual sustaining of all things.
The concept of God’s omnipotence does not imply that God does or will do everything imaginable. God’s actions are always consistent with His nature. For example, 2 Timothy 2:13 notes, “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” This indicates that God cannot do anything that would contradict His own character, such as lying (Hebrews 6:18) or being tempted by evil (James 1:13).
In essence, God’s omnipotence is a reflection of His supreme authority and power over all creation, exercised in harmony with His other attributes, such as His goodness, justice, and love. Through His omnipotence, God accomplishes His purposes, demonstrating His sovereignty and care for His creation.
