The Bible presents the view that God is the source of moral law and absolute moral standards. In the Scriptures, morality is deeply intertwined with the character of God and His design for human life. The Ten Commandments, found in Exodus 20:1-17, serve as a foundational moral code given by God to guide the Israelites. Jesus Christ summarized these commandments into two great commandments in the New Testament: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39).

The Bible suggests that understanding right from wrong is written on the human heart, with conscience bearing witness to these laws. Romans 2:14-15 explains, “Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.”

Therefore, from a biblical perspective, the concept of morality is inseparable from God. Without God, the absolute standard by which morality is measured would not exist, according to biblical teachings. God’s character and His revelation to humanity are the basis for understanding what is good, right, and moral.
