In the Scriptures, we find several women who played pivotal roles in sharing God’s word, prophesying, and leading in faith. Their actions and words have been instrumental in guiding, teaching, and strengthening the faith of God’s people.
- Deborah (Judges 4-5) – Deborah serves as a prophetess and the fourth Judge of Israel. She leads Israel to victory alongside Barak and composes a victory song that recounts the Lord’s deliverance.
- Miriam (Exodus 15:20-21) – After the Hebrews’ successful crossing of the Red Sea, Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, is described as a prophetess. She leads the women in song and dance, praising God for the deliverance from the Egyptians.
- Huldah (2 Kings 22:14-20) – Huldah is a prophetess in the time of King Josiah. When the Book of the Law is found in the temple, she is consulted to interpret its meanings and implications for Israel, demonstrating her role in guiding the nation spiritually.
- Anna (Luke 2:36-38) – In the New Testament, Anna is described as a prophetess who worships at the Temple in Jerusalem. She meets the infant Jesus during His presentation at the temple and speaks about Him to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
- Priscilla (Acts 18:24-26) – Along with her husband Aquila, Priscilla is instrumental in explaining the way of God more accurately to Apollos. While not explicitly called a preacher, her role in teaching and guiding others in the faith is evident.
- Phoebe (Romans 16:1-2) – Described by Paul as a deacon of the church in Cenchreae, she is commended to the Romans and is said to have been a benefactor of many, including Paul. Her leadership and support of the church indicate a significant role in the early Christian community.
These women, among others, illustrate the varied ways God has used faithful individuals, regardless of gender, to proclaim His message, lead, and teach His people throughout the history of salvation as recorded in the Bible.
